First time going to Great America memory

This memory of my mom and dad came to me while I was the church bus and it brought I smile to my face. It was the summer of 1983 or 1984 The pastor made an announcement in church that they were going to Great America by the end of summer. Of course this made me and my brothers excited. After church we asked our parents if we were going. They looked at us and said that they would think about it and of course we left it at that.
As the days with by and weeks went by we sorta forgot about it until the pastor announced it once again. “Only two weeks left to get the money in for the trip.” After church we asked if we were going and they told us no, they couldn’t afford it. We were heartbroken but they  said that on day we would have a picnic instead. We were sad but it would have been our very first picnic at Franklin Park.
That Saturday morning we woke up early I would say around 7 AM or so and got dressed and at a lite breakfast. By 9AM we were heading to the park. Now mind you we had to walk past the church to get to the park and we were ahead of our parents when they called us and asked “Where are you going.” I said to the park. Then they said “Don’t you guys want to go to Great America.” You should have seen the smiles on our faces as we ran back and hugged them. They got us real good that day.
My brothers and I had a blast at Great America and I think our parents were happy that we were happy.
